With just over a month to go Republican primary election former Governor of Alaska and Vice Presidential Nominee Sarah Palin released an endorsement of former Hewlett Packard CEO Carly Fiorina.  Of course it was almost a year ago when Palin resigned her position as Governor of Alaska and began her nationwide blitz.  She has since become a bestselling author with her book Going Rouge and was even the keynote speaker at the national Tea Party Convention a few months ago.  Palin seemed to be building up some serious credibility amongst the conservative grassroots over the past few months.

She received some blow back in February when she endorsed her former running-mate John McCain for re-election in favor of his primary challenger JD Hayworth.  Of course most conservative activists gave Palin a pass on this endorsement because McCain was the person responsible for making her endorsement relevant on a national scale.  However, aside from McCain, Palin has made some endorsements that pass the conservative test such as Rand Paul and Doug Hoffman.

The real shock came when the former governor endorsed McCain’s darling running for Senate in California, Carly Fiorina.  Apparently Sarah Palin forgot about Carly’s embarrassing gaffes where she insulted both McCain and Palin, and subsequently got her fired from the McCain campaign:

One would think that after the McCain cronies attempted to hang Palin out to dry and spread rumors of her “diva” attitude following the campaign that she would have had it.  However, she again returned to the one who punched her political meal ticket in 2008 and endorsed his hand-picked candidate in California yesterday.

But something happened on the road to Rome, The Politico has noticed Palin’s decision yesterday is vastly unpopular amongst her very own supporters.   On her own Facebook page thousands of comments of disapproval have poured in expressing outrage and urging her to reconsider her endorsement of Fiorina.  It seems the very grassroots conservatives Palin has been appealing to the last year are now disgusted with her lack of follow through by not endorsing the true conservative in the race Chuck DeVore.

Here are a few excerpts of comments left on Palin’s post touting her endorsement:

“I am really disappointed that you are endorsing a progressive instead of the only constitutional conservative running in the senate race is Chuck DeVore.”

“I hope Palin will reconsider and endorse DeVore. He is the best candidate.”
“I am sorry. I love Sarah and I understand her support of the RINO John McCain. However, Carly Fiorina is also a RINO in how she has conducted herself to date. Sure she has done some things right, like her NRA membership, however, I support a real Tea Party Supported and endorsed CONSERVATIVE, Mr. DeVore.”

“Wrong, wrong, and wrong — Chuck DeVore is THE conservative. You’re losing me, Sarah …”

“Sarah- I have looked at all the other comments and the majority are clearly AGAINST your endorsement of Fiorina. This was a VERY BAD decision on your part. You have lost all credibility with me and thousands of others in the tea party movement. If I ever see you on Hannity or any FOX news program I will automatically shut you off now. Just like Obama your endorsements are meaningless. YOU ARE SUCH A HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT!!!”

In a night when Republicans are celebrating wins in Virginia and New Jersey, one election (NY-23) has put a spotlight on the dangerous practice of Republicans throwing their own candidates under a huge Tea Party bus.

I love how Republicans always claim that they’re fans of “local control”.  Really??  Then why did those same Republicans overturn the decision of local Republicans from New York?  How would Orange County Republicans feel if New York Republicans spent money and energy undermining a candidate that was selected by their local party?

Let me be clear.  This is not a post about ideology.  I could care less how conservative or liberal Hoffman and Dede are. That’s not the point.  The point is that at a time when Republicans should be coalescing behind the idea of recapturing a Congressional majority, they are being caught in a circular firing squad over exactly what kind of Republican should be part of that majority.

Can you imagine what would happen to the Democratic Party if they decided to eliminate Blue Dogs from their caucus? Political suicide, right?  What makes Republicans think that it’s not the same the other way around?

Our country is not a hard right country.  Our country is center right.  What does that mean?  It means the Republican coalition can not be made up of hard right Conservatives only.  Ronald Reagan (who is ironically the sweetheart of those hard right Conservatives) understood this.  He understood that the Republican Party could only thrive with a coalition of moderates and conservatives.  So why does the Republican Party seem so hell bent on kicking those moderates to the curb?

For the sake of the future of the Republican Party, what happened tonight in NY-23 was God sent.  If Hoffman (a third party candidate who does not live in the district) won, those purist Republicans would have every reason to continue their declared war on Republican moderates.

Christie and McDonnell beat their opponents by focusing on the economy and by talking about jobs.  Republicans should take note of that, and 2010 candidates should model their campaigns accordingly.

Throwing moderates under the bus will spell doom for the Republican Party’s chances at taking back Congress.  Let’s see if the Party grows up and realizes that politics is a game of addition, not subtraction.  Talk about shooting yourself on the foot…

So everyone has heard that Democrats are winning the battle in social media against Republicans.  Barack Obama won his Presidential race because of an outstanding social media campaign that tied in a new generation of voters while Republicans were two steps behind and a Farmville dollar short.

But what about Conservatives?  On Twitter, there is a growing movement of Independent Conservatives #icon, Tea Party goers #teaparty, and Tenth Amendment proponents #tenth, not to mention lastly and certainly not least – the Top Conservatives of Twitter #tcot.  I did a study over a 30 minute span between 9:28PST and 9:58PST on Tuesday October 27th, comparing the tweets of only conservatives (not specifically Republicans #GOP) to that of the primary Democratic and liberal hashtags on Twitter; #left, #liberal, #prog, #p2, #dem, #democrat and #dems (If I am missing some please let me know).  The results were astounding.

#p2 was clearly the leading hashtag for liberals and progressives.  In fact, it was the only tag of those I listed with double digit tweets in that span with 166.

#tcot was clearly the leading hashtag for conservatives, but #teaparty showed up strong as well.  The others also did not get in the double digits, although I myself am a big proponent of #tenth.  Overwhelmingly, #tcot led the pack with an obverwhelming 523, while #teaparty had a respectable 61.  #tcot has been around for some time and is clearly well established.  Naturally, some tweeters take advantage of that just to grab attention.  Likewise, alot of the #dem tags were actually conservative tweetes doing the same.

But something to take note of were the two tweets a minute for a relatively new #teaparty movement that repeatedly gets diminished by the MSM.   Plus overall, Conservatives out-tweeted Democrats, progressives and liberals more than 3.5 to 1!  That is an astounding difference, and if I were a Democratic leader, I would be worried.  The GOP establishment may not be winning the social media war, but the Conservatives certainly are.
