There is much discussion and speculation as to what Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu will do in the November election for the Orange County Board of Supervisor’s 4th District.   Because Shawn Nelson came short of the required 50% +1 vote to avoid a November run-off with the 1st runner up, the 2nd place finisher is entitled to a run-off.   Nelson beat Sidhu by 12 percentage points on June 8th, but because there were 6 candidates on the ballot he did not receive 50% of the vote.

As I blogged about before, Nelson was the official candidate of the Republican Party of Orange County, receiving more than 85% of the vote from the Central Committee for the endorsement.  The race quickly became Nelson and the GOP versus the public employee unions.  The local unions abandoned their officially endorsed candidate for Sheriff, Bill Hunt, and shifted their focus to Sidhu pouring in well over a million dollars of independent expenditures puffing him up.  Going into November, speculation is that the unions will direct their funds elsewhere with many more races  to be involved in.  Without the support of Harry’s biggest cheerleaders, it begs the question, will he run a hard race alone?

The Orange County Register reported that Sidhu intends to keep running, commenting to the Total Buzz that “money is not an object” in his vow to continue his race.   For readers who may not know, Harry is a wealthy entrepreneur who owns multiple Burger King and El Pollo Loco franchises.  He resides in a large house in the Yorba Estate in Anaheim Hills (ironically outside the 4th Supervisorial District.)  So without union financial support, Harry could still use personal funds to continue his campaign.  Going forward Nelson will have the clear advantage of incumbency and the ability to raise much more money from that position.  That advantage puts Harry in a difficult and expensive position to be in.

The Total Buzz article mentioned was published on June 9th, the day after Harry lost the special election.  He also commented to the Buzz that “I’m a fighter…I’ve always been a good fighter, and I believe that this is so close – 5,000 votes short – that it’s absolutely winnable. I truly believe I will win in November.”  The only problem is that Nelson’s lead has grown to well over 7,000 votes now that all the ballots have been counted.   Harry’s campaign staff has departed from his operation, and his campaign headquarters has been closed down.  So, he claims he will keep fighting…but really WWHD: What Will Harry Do?

File under “over the line” “classless” “disrespectful” or any other adjective.  Carly Fiorina last week called Chuck DeVore’s ballot title “deceptive” on Twitter, referring to his “Assemblyman/Military Reservist” designation.   This claim by Fiorina is not only bogus, but downright offensive to all of those who have served our country.  How does Fiorina expect to position herself as a pro-military candidate when she publicly belittles the service of a veteran of our military who attained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Army National Guard?  Hopefully the person who tweeted that comment on @CarlyForCA’s page has been replaced.

DeVore of course is a Military Reservist, and if Carly honestly thought it was a false title she would have taken it up with the Secretary of State or the Attorney General, not a petty Twitter post.  After months of petty actions by the Fiorina campaign nothing should be surprising at this point.

Fiorina’s sleazy Boxeresque attack however ended up being timely.  Coincidentally Assemblyman DeVore served in the military for 24 years, and the top rated show “24″ on Fox that ended tonight.  DeVore quickly responded with this ad:

This ad spread around the internet preceded DeVore’s commercials that aired on the series finale of “24.”   I would love to see what a “24″ themed ad about Fiorina’s military experience would look like.  I am imagining scenes with security escorts…of Carly being escorting out of a building from a job from which she has just been fired. (ehh hem Hewlett Packard)

Mayor Lozano claims there were too many events:  Police Department Open House, Relay for Life and Graduation ceremonies.

Excuses, Excuses, Excuses!

Perhaps the Mayor should figure that the residents in Baldwin Park have other priorities than get caught up in a ridiculous rally called “Pro-Immigration”.

Geez, Mayor get real!

A month and a half ago the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) released a poll on the US Senate Republican Primary that showed Carly Fiorina leading the race with 24%, Tom Campbell with 23% and Chuck DeVore with only 8%.  The rest of the respondents were undecided on their choice as to who would be the GOP nominee.  The Fiorina campaign used this opportunity to try to urge DeVore to step out of the race, suggesting he had no shot and he would only be a spoiler for Tom Campbell.   However, today’s poll released has Fiorina with 25%, Campbell still at 23% and DeVore doubling his support to 16%.  Basically of the 9% of voters that have decided on a candidate 8% of them have decided to go with DeVore.  36% of voters remain undecided, indicating it is still anybody’s race.

That same poll released in March had Poizner trailing by 50 points to Whitman.  The new poll has him down only 9%.  This of course was due to his massive media blitz over the last two months.  The poll also indicates that 31% of likely primary voters remain undecided in the Gubernatorial race.

With a little over 3 weeks left in California’s primary season everything remains up in the air, but the two candidates who appear to have the wind at their backs are DeVore and Poizner.  Stay tuned…

So by now you’ve probably heard about Dr. Rand Paul; both Kentucky and Ron Paul’s favorite son (don’t tell Ronald or Robert).  In August of 2009, the little-known Ophthalmologist from Bowling Green announced his campaign for Jim Bunning’s vacated US Senate seat – and yesterday the Tea Party darling defeated the epitome of an ‘Establishment’ candidate in Kentucky’s Secretary of State Trey Grayson by 23.4%;  58.8% to 35.4% (Full Election Results here).

When Paul announced his candidacy in August, Greyson hadn’t even stepped in the race, yet was still more than double digits ahead of Paul due to his high name-ID as a Statewide-Elected Official.  Yet Paul had two things that would help demolish Mitch McConnell’s chosen son and propel him to the Kentucky Randslide of 2010:  Principles and Papa.

As founder and chairman of the anti-tax organization Kentucky Taxpayers United (KTU) since 1994, Rand was clearly a limited government conservative – something his opponent could only talk about after repeatedly asking for budget increases for his Department as Secretary of State.

And as the son of Tea Party favorite Ron Paul – the inventor of the ‘moneybomb’ – Rand had no problem raising money from all over the country – Trey Grayson even ran a commercial saying as much as 75% of his donations were from outside the state.

It also didn’t help that Trey Grayson was a Clinton Democrat in 1992, and was even a Delegate for him in the Presidential Election that year.  And in 1994, when the Democratic Party was in decline, guess what?  Time to ‘Specter’ on over to the winning side (and yes, I want to verbalise the word Specter, so please feel free to use that as much as you want).

Americans, whether they consider themselves ‘Tea Partiers’ or not, are tired of politicians who will do whatever it takes to get elected.   We saw it in Pennsylvania, and we’ll see it again and again going forward.  Strong, principled men and women who are fervently against expanding government will win big in 2010.  This is only the beginning.

Prop. 13.  Seismic Retrofits. YES:  Earthquake proofing your house shouldn’t trigger a tax increase until you’re ready to sell.  Any questions?

Prop. 14. Distorted Primary. NO: This was the result of the corrupt deal for the tax increase engineered by Abel Maldonado that included this measure to by-pass party primaries in a manner Maldonado believed would enhance his future election prospects.  Instead of voters of each party putting their best candidate forward, this jerry-rigged system is designed to disguise the difference between the parties and force those pesky third parties off the general election ballot entirely.

Prop. 15. Taxpayer Funded Elections.  NO: The real purpose of this measure is to allow the legislature to tap taxpayers to finance political campaigns.  Jefferson said it best: “To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation of ideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.”

Prop. 16. Utility Elections. YES: Cash-guzzling city governments have been taking over the territory of utilities through eminent domain and PG&E wants to put it to a vote.  This measure gives you the choice upon whose mercy your future electricity bills will depend: the monopoly of city hall or the monopoly of your utility.  Here’s a better idea: restore the freedom of individual consumers to choose among competing providers who actually have to earn their business.  Alas, that part was left out by the suits at PG&E.

Prop. 17.  Insurance Rates. YES: A simple question: should drivers be able to take their “continuous coverage” discount with them when they change insurance companies?  A simpler question: why are our laws such a micro managing mess that we have to vote on something as self-evident as this in the first place?

On the statewide races:

For Governor, Steve Poizner: Steve had the courage to support Arizona’s decision to enforce our immigration laws when Meg Whitman cut and ran.  He opposes the bank bailouts, rampant borrowing and environmental extremism that Meg Whitman embraces.  And unlike Whitman, Steve Poizner was never “a huge fan” of radical leftist Van Jones.  This time, let’s have a governor from the Republican wing of the Republican Party.

For Lt. Governor, Sam Aanestad: Sam was my seatmate for many years in both the Assembly and the Senate.  He never wavered from his devotion to Republican principles of limited government.  Abel Maldonado broke his signed taxpayer pledge and bears responsibility not only for the biggest tax increase in California’s history, but also the budgets that ran California off the fiscal cliff.  No single race on the ballot more clearly defines the difference between the Party of Reagan and the Party of Schwarzenegger.

For Attorney General, John Eastman: I worked with John Eastman at the Claremont Institute – a public policy think tank devoted to restoring American founding principles to the public policy debate.  John is a nationally renowned Constitutional advocate and scholar whose leadership is desperately needed in the Attorney General’s office.  Imagine having an Attorney General who not only respects the Constitution but who understands and reveres it.

For Insurance Commissioner, Anybody But Villines.  Mike Villines was another of the sell-out Republican votes on the massive tax increase that crushed what was left of our state’s economy last year, after signing a no-new-taxes pledge.  Liars don’t belong in government.

For U.S. Senate, Chuck DeVore: Chuck is a conservative’s conservative who has always stood on principle, even when it has meant standing virtually alone.  I’ve never heard him give a speech without thinking “I wish I’d said that.”  I rank him up there with Sam Aanestad as one of the finest people I’ve had the opportunity to serve with in the legislature.  He would become an instant leader in the United States Senate.

Today, I learned something called “May Revise”…(Dexter Morgan is always learning something new) California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger announced the budget revision for the spending plan for the next year (2010-11) to close a $19.1 billion deficit.

Ohhh, this month is May…Revise.  I get it!

Governor wants to eliminate the state’s welfare program starting in October.  Hey, not a bad idea.

Governor did not propose any new tax hikes.  Sounds good to me.

The Democrats are saying “Not so fast, Arnold!”

Senator Darrell Steinberg (D-Sacramento), Senate President, says, “We will not pass a budget that eliminates Cal-WORKS. Outright. We will not be party to devastating children and families. Period. It’s not why we came here, it’s not what we believe in. … We need revenue, and we will fight for revenue.”

Revenue = Taxes.  This Steinberg guy will devastate children and families with less take home pay!

Then, Senator Denise Moreno-Ducheny (D-San Diego) says, “This is just a sad budget day”

Geez, I was told this lady has been in the legislature for 14 years and hasn’t produced a state budget on time!

With only $14,733 raised, and $2,558 cash on hand as of the last financial disclosure statement, congressional challenger Christopher Scott Riggs doesn’t pose much of a threat to Congressman Ken Calvert, the eight term incumbent.  But the Democrats know that offering a primary challenge is a good way to get Republican incumbents to waste money in the primary, and put a dent in their war-chest for the general election.

Take Riggs’ situation for example.  At the end of the 2009 filing period, he had only raised $2,000 for his congressional campaign against Calvert, and with the candidate filing deadline quickly approaching, he needed $8,758 to pay his filing fees and candidate statement fee.  According to my estimates, Riggs may have had $4,875 on hand at the time, and still needed $3,883.  So how did he do it?

In step Nancy Pelosi’s business partners, Warren and Nancie Mitchell, to save the campaign.

At the last minute (on 3/8/2010, just before Riggs drops a total of $7,018 on 3/8 and 3/9/2010 for filing fees), Warren and Nancie Mitchell each contributed $2,400, the maximum allowed contribution, to Riggs’ primary campaign.  The contributions make up 38% of Riggs’ total contributions.  Warren Mitchell is the Chairman of Clean Energy Fuels Corp, Which is funded in part by Paul and Nancy Pelosi.  Unrelated, Clean Energy Fuels corp was also awarded $34 Million of DOE stimulus money, or 11% of the total funding by the DOE.

Sen Diane Feinstein (D-CA) -  $1,000
Rep John B. Larson (D-Conn) – $500
Sen Harry Reid (D-Nev) – $1,000
Sen Chris Dodd (D-Conn) – $500

So the question I have, is what interest does Nancy and Paul Pelosi’s business partners have in this race?

Steve Poizner was so pumped up after Tuesday night’s Tea Party event in Shingle Springs at the Ponderosa High School gym that prompted the Insurance Commissioner to pony up $2.5 Million in his campaign coffers.

Mmmmm…Mr. Poizner that is a lot of dough, which brings to a grand total of $22 Million to get you closer to the Governor’s office.  Ka-Ching!

Sir, You, Meg Whitman, Chris Kelly and other self-funded candidates should stop this practice of using your personal wealth to buy an office.

Remember, we are a Republic not a Aristocracy!

Uhhh, I hear there is something called FPPC, a California agency that oversees campaign finance, could do something about this.

What about the legislators or the people amend our campaign finance laws that would ban such practice of candidates who self-fund their campaigns?

By the way, Mr. Poizner:  Dexter Morgan knows that $2.5 Million can buy a whole lot of stuff such as books for kids, food for the needy and heck even establish a business to create much needed jobs.

Though, I digress about how you spend your money, because in your little world “Money is No Object”!

It is with much excitement when an invitation landed in my lap for an opportunity to blog for “Drunk on Politics”!

Yours truly will posts items of much interest to the audience:  the good, bad and the ugly in the political arena!

We are in an era of political “populism” that nothing is sacred or off-limits when it comes to exposing the realities of what is going on in our political environment.

Yes, both political parties will be held to account on any flaws of political policy, hypocrisy and of their elected leaders.

Yes, there will be praise through favorable posts as a mechanism to lift the readers spirits, hearts and souls.

Yes, this contributor will be recalcitrant to the powers-to-be request(s) to tone the decibel that may be a threat to his/her power, because at the end of the day the truth prevails.

We should be reminded with this old phrase:  The Truth Will Make You Free!

Also, some of the posts will reinforce the thought “How can one have a conscience?” without any consequences from the masses.

Trust me, there will be no blood…because it is no fun to clean up the mess.

This is the different Dexter Morgan with a keen insight about politics who relishes in feeding his audiences with pure political drama that will put you at the edge of your seats.
