The grassroots effort to qualify a constitutional amendment that would make illegal for public employee unions to take political contributions from employee paychecks announced a new weapon today. According the press release, which I copied below, voters will now be able to sign the petition electronically, by using an iPhone. If this new method proves to be legal, it could revolutionize the way that signature gathering is done in the future.

ALLOWING VOTERS TO SIGN INITIATIVE PETITIONS VIA iPHONES
California voters can now sign the Citizen Power Initiative, a ballot measure and proposed constitutional amendment to make it illegal for political contributions to be taken from public employees’ paychecks, using an iPhone.
In three simple steps, voters can read the full text of the initiative, fill out the required information, such as their name and residential address, and then sign the petition, just as they would on paper, on the iPhone’s touch-screen. Petition gatherers can also have other registered voters sign the petition on their iPhones.
“This is groundbreaking technology that will revolutionize California’s initiative process and we’re at the forefront,” said Mark Meckler, one of the measure’s five proponents who also serves as the California co-coordinator and a National Coordinator for the Tea Party Patriots. “The Tea Party Patriots used the Internet to organize rallies to defeat tax-raising ballot measures last May we’re using the latest technology tools again to make sure the Citizen Power Campaign gets on the November ballot.
