Carly Fiorina’s 55,000 Twitter “Followers” from the NRSC

Today, it is easy to compare different politicians simply based on their number of followers, friends or fans – and believe me, we have.  But as I stated in that column, ‘real connections are far more valuable whether in politics or business.  Networking is powerful when it’s real, and hollow when it’s not.’

I touched a bit on this race in that column, but now that Carly Fiorina has officially entered, I thought I would take a more in-depth look at their social media strategies.  And boy did I notice something big.

Take a look at Carly Fiorina’s Twitter account @CarlyforCA – actually, more importantly take a look at her followers.  Notice anything?  About 95% of her followers are spam bots and porn accounts.  Most of them look like the aforementioned ‘ShadoLegend’ with 21 followers (20 recommended users you start with and…Carly).

This all started about two weeks ago at the end of October when little-known California Senate Candidate Al Ramirez, aka @makeCAspecial thanked the NRSC for their help in adding 4,000 followers in a night.  Funny, so did Carly Fiorina – that same night.  Now, both accounts have about 55,000 followers, and they’re almost all spam-bots.

The NRSC should be ashamed of itself for thinking they could cheat the system – true social media users are far too wise for that.

Chuck DeVore has run one of the truest, most grass-roots social media oriented campaigns in history.  @ChuckDeVore has over 8,200 followers now, and as you can see , his followers are real.  Heck, he’s probably met over half of them through all the campaign events he’s been to over the past 6 months.  And despite 1/6th the followers, he’s on twice as many lists as Carly.

If you believe politicians shouldn’t cheat the system and should be called out for doing this, then please RT, share, and spread the word.  It’s up to us to hold them accountable.
