All Politics is..Social?

Everyone knows the famous phrase from Former Speak Tip O’Neill that ‘All Politics is Local’.  The only electoral loss in his entire lifetime was when he ran for a seat on the Cambridge City Council as a Senior at Boston College.  Well, hundreds of local politicians across the country are hoping not to have that same result; and they’re turning to social media.

From white-haired City Councilmen who have been on the dais for over a decade, to the young up-and-comers who want to unseat them – local politicians are realizing the communication capabilities of social media.  Being able to target specific voters or leaders in their area and conversate with them instantly is absolutely invaluable.  Whereas mail and email campaigns can cost thousands of dollars with consultants, printing and shipping costs – a simple local social media expert can not only set up accounts for politicians and campaigns, but can teach them how to utilize that tool for years to come.

Many larger politicians have long ago jumped on board the Twitter and Facebook gravy train – but most of them contract it out to a staffer or outside company as a simple means to get out press releases.  The wise local politician understands the real power here is direct communication with constituents and they are beginning to grow their accounts and open themselves up to their followers and fans.  Our future leaders in America will all not only be somewhat conversant; they will be absolutely fluent in today’s social media.

Go ahead – check Twitter and Facebook for your City’s local Councilmembers – I bet you they have quorum.
