The year is 2001. George W. Bush has been sworn in as the first Republican since his father with a strong GOP majority in the House and a slim majority in the Senate (50-50 with Cheney being the deciding vote). The majorities only grew in the first midterm elections, and what do Republicans have to show for it?
We witnessed an absolute trampling of Republican principles which led to what I would argue is the largest anti-Republican lashes Americans have ever witnessed. In 2006, we saw a sweeping victory for the Democrats, which captured the House, the Senate, and a majority of governorships and state legislatures. Democrat registration was higher than ever, and in 2008 it led to the election of one of the most liberal Presidents in our history!
All this because Republicans didn’t act like Republicans.

A Democrat in Congress is far better than someone who pretends to fly under a Republican flag and misrepresents the principles and values of the Gallant Old Party. We only have one year until the midterm elections and I guarantee the Right will win that seat back - and it won’t be Dede Scozzafava running.
I would much rather have a Bill Owens in office for one year, than a Dede Scozzafava with an (R) next to her name in office for twenty. NY23 was a win.
