Conservatives Fuel Hoffman’s Campaign Hopes

Just last month Conservative Party candidate for New York’s 23rd Congressional District Doug Hoffman faced an uphill against an establishment Republican and a Liberal Democrat.  Left-leaning Republican Assemblywoman Dede Scozzafava seemed to be the frontrunner with a strong challenge coming from Democrat nominee Bill Owens for the traditionally Republican seat (On June 2, 2009, Republican U.S. Rep. John McHugh was appointed Secretary of the Army by President Barack Obama).

However, RNC Chaiman Michael Steele was hesitant to fund her candidacy and Democrat Bill Owens’ candidacy grew stronger.  Hoffman was polling in third and some Republicans such as Newt Gingrich weighed in that a liberal Republican like Scozzafava is “dramatically better than the Democrat.”  But many conservatives disagreed.  Radio personality Rush Limbaugh ripped into Gingrich saying “I really do not know what Newt Gingrich was thinking endorsing Scozzafava.”  Other media personalities such as Sean Hannity, Glenn Beck, Michelle Malkin and Hugh Hewitt jumped on board.  The Club for Growth soon backed Hoffman to the tune of $300,000 in ads.

Then, just five days ago Sarah Palin, former Vice Presidential candidate for the GOP, bucked the party candidate and announced her endorsement of Hoffman.   Soon, Governor Tim Pawlenty and Former Senator and Presidential Candidate Fred Thompson both jumped on board and nothing has since been the same for Hoffman.

Dollars began trickling in from all over the country and Hoffman bought $125,000 in TV ads.  Regional Directorof the Hoffman campaign Yates Walker said, “We are delighted with the national support we’ve seen and the donations from all over the country.  However, we are still being outspent by both our Republican and Democratic challengers.”

Yet despite being outspent, the latest poll now shows Hoffman with a slim lead over his two challengers.  His Facebook fan page shows 10 times as many supporters as Scozzafava’s, and his momentum continues to grow.  To read more about Doug, you can go to his website www.doughoffmanforcongress.com.  The Special Election takes place this Tuesday, November 3rd.
